London Olympics Lack Energy Saving Plan

LOCOG, the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games currently do not have an energy-saving strategy. They have vowed to make this years games the greenest Olympics and Para-Olympics to date.

The Commission for a Sustainable London (CSL) 2012 have called for these issues to be addressed urgently, as there is a window of opportunity to make for lost time.

The commission report: Having failed to deliver 20% of the electricity for the Games from renewable resources, LOCOG undertook in early 2011 to deliver equivalent savings through energy conservation. Although there is evidence of some initiatives, LOCOG does not have an overall energy conservation strategy. The Commission has recommended that this is addressed urgently.

Shaun McCarthy, CSL chairman, is reported by bbc.co.uk as saying: “We have known since early 2011 that LOCOG [the London 2012 organisers] will not be able to meet its original target of 20% electricity from renewable sources.

“The new target is to save the equivalent amount of carbon by reducing overall energy demand, but LOCOG does not currently have a comprehensive energy conservation strategy in place to demonstrate how they will achieve this.”
